The Data Driven Age
The IOWN Global Forum is leading the development of pioneering technology that replaces electronics with photonics to transfer vast quantities of data at speeds previously considered impossible.
Ultra-fast processing and data-transfer capabilities will make it possible to develop the next generation of AI systems, which will handle unprecedented levels of distributed data in real time.

The shift from
electrons to photons
Internet traffic volume is rapidly increasing. Networks need to be able to carry more and more data, which means they need to increase their capacity. This is one of the key objectives of the IOWN Global Forum.
The deployment of applications whose logic is distributed across the network (including some classes of AI-based applications) requires shorter and shorter transmission delays. Reducing end-to-end latency is another of the main objectives of the IOWN Global Forum.
Today’s technology runs on electrons to send information – electrons that generate heat and create friction. This is why servers, computers and other electronic devices warm up – and need cooling down – while in use. Electrons cannot carry data fast enough to achieve the instant and hyperconnected world to which we seem so close.
Photons can. The IOWN Global Forum is leading the development of pioneering technology that augments and replaces electronics to transfer and process vast quantities of data at speeds previously considered impossible. Photonic networks meet this challenge head-on. They are superfast, sustainable, and will open up a world of new use cases, starting a revolution of what we think is possible.
Use cases that require processing and transferring data at ultra-fast speeds, including:
- Remotely-controlled robotics for industries including mining, construction, agriculture and healthcare.
- Remote-access healthcare tools that require low power but offer high capacity.
- Enhanced human connection with no lag time.
- Instant translation tools.
- AI and processing power at the edge.
- Entertainment use cases, including remote E-sports and remote music recording with ultra-low latency.
- Biological digital twins – i.e. of organs like the heart.
