Applications

High-capacity and ultra-low latency optical networks will enable highly distributed storage and computing infrastructure, with geographically dispersed data centers that offer increased resiliency against disruption, whether natural or man-made. This will enable businesses to deliver always-on operations and customers to benefit from uninterrupted services, thanks to the high reliability, disaster resilience, and advanced performance of these networks.

Moving from electronic to photonics-based communication networks will significantly decrease power consumption and help drive down carbon emissions. Creating a more distributed infrastructure will also enable greater access to local renewable energy and water-cooling systems from more remotely located data centers. Energy-efficient, ultra-performing networks and computing infrastructure will ultimately accelerate business innovation and growth, revolutionizing diverse industries.

The IOWN Global forum is leading the rollout of All-Photonics Networks (APNs), an end-to-end optical communication system for data centers, networks and devices. To tackle the world’s insatiable appetite for data, this innovation both reduces network power consumption and delay and increases capacity and reliability, all of which existing electronics-based technology struggles to satisfy.

Open APNs will revolutionize Generative AI and Large Language Model (LLM) training by enabling ultra-fast, energy-efficient data transmission between user locations and green data centers equipped with high-performance GPU computing. This infrastructure supports seamless transfer of large training datasets, dynamic on-demand access to GPU resources, and secure handling of sensitive data, optimizing training time, reducing power consumption, and ensuring sustainable, scalable AI operations with advanced cooling and green power systems.
